The Carrizozo Street Fair Scholarships are available to Carrizozo residents wanting to continue their education.  Three different scholarships are offered for up to $1,000 each:

Graduating Seniors — for students who will graduate from Carrizozo High School this year and need financial help to go on to college.  A GED diploma also counts.

Community Service – for students who will graduate from Carrizozo High School this year and believe they have no chance of getting financial or any other kind of help to continue their education, whether in a trade school or college.  It is hoped by 2015 this scholarship will actually be earned by the so-called ‘hard luck’ student who has the highest number of hours of community service in an effort to ‘pay back’ to the community for their educational support.  A GED diploma also counts.

Continuing Education — for former Carrizozo students who have gone back to school to get a degree of any kind that will improve their career pursuit opportunity and benefit them as a person.  Applications for this scholarship may be submitted annually for continuing support.  A GED diploma also counts including home school accreditation that is acceptable for college entrance.

All applicants must have

• A Carrizozo area address
• Two letters of recommendation (one each from a teacher, relative, friend, community member or employer)
• A statement describing what getting this scholarship would mean to you
• Details about community work you have done
• Grade point average is required, but it is not a deciding factor in who gets these scholarships.

The completed form and information is due BY April 1, 2012.

THE OUTHOUSE in Carrizozo history:

The town was founded in 1899, at a time when the neighboring gold mining community of White Oaks was in decline. Many residences and businesses moved from White Oaks to Carrizozo including the Exchange Bank owned by William C. McDonald, our state’s first Governor. McDonald was planning a festive day to celebrate the Carrizozo Exchange Bank’s new location* one Saturday morning in April, 1907. However, Ira Wetmore, the Governor’s nemesis, had other plans. He placed eight OUTHOUSES directly across the street from the new bank to show his contempt for the business. This influential rivalry continued and gave rise to many of Carrizozo’s idiosyncrasies. Such as our streets layout and design. All because of a little night soil. Join us, Labor Day, to celebrate the glory days of the Thunder Box! * The Masonic Lodge purchased the Carrizozo Exchange Bank building in 1925 when the bank went bust. It continues in that fashion today.

·         Each heat consists of 2 or 3 teams depending on the number of entrants. We will have double elimination to determine who participates in the final race for the trophy.

·         The “track” will be from the post office to 5^th Avenue.

·         The course will be set up with slight curves that each team is to maneuver through.

·         There will be 6 “gates” which will be a traffic cone and a broomstick.

·         The 2 outside team members will push the outhouse towards a gate.  They must slow/stop the outhouse at each gate so the inside rider can place a roll of toilet paper on the broomstick.  The rider cannot grab the pole of the gate.  Then the pushers race to the next gate and so on.

2009 Carrizozo Labor Day Scholarship recipients pictured above are Danielle Cartier, whose passion for numbers will help her earn a degree in accounting; Alyshia Culley, whose desire is to become a neonatal nurse; Brandon Morales, who’s completing a degree in psychology at NM State in Las Cruces; and Judy Nash, who’s completing her double major degree in psychology and criminal justice at ENMU.

The purpose of the Street Fair was initially to provide a venue for folks to
just have fun on Labor Day Monday. The past several years, however, the
purpose has included offering scholarships and now teacher appreciations.
The event on Labor Day will continue offering a fun, relaxing yet full day of
activities, now that the Cowboy Days will join Street Fair this year. But it
will also be a reminder that the future lies in our children and will offer an
opportunity for folks to participate in helping fund more scholarships.

2012 T-Shirt Design.

The Carrizozo Labor Day Street Fair is reaching it 20th Anniversary! We are looking for talented artists to create a new logo and T-Shirt design for the fair. There will be a $500 prize for the winning design! Must me a Lincoln County resident. All rights to the image retained by the Carrizozo Street Fair.
