This scholarship program is available for Carrizozo residents who want to continue their education.  As long as funding is available, two scholarships will be offered for up to $1,000 each.  However, if there are several applicants in real need with outstanding documentation, the funds available may be shared between them.

Street Fair scholarships will be divided between the following two groups:

Graduating Seniors — for students who will graduate from Carrizozo High School or complete their GED this year and need financial help for college.  One important criteria for this award is to honor students with a high number of community service hours for ‘paying back’ the community for their support.

Continuing Education — for former Carrizozo students who have gone back to school to get a degree of any kind that will improve their career opportunity and benefit them as a person.  Applications for this scholarship may be submitted annually for continuing support.  Those who hold a GED diploma or home school accreditation that is acceptable for college entrance will also be considered for this award.

All applicants must have

• A Carrizozo area address;
  • Two letters of recommendation — one each from a teacher, relative, friend, community member or employer,
  • A statement describing your career goals,
  • Details about the community work you have done, and
  • Grade point average information — but it will not be a deciding factor in who gets these scholarships.

Graduating Seniors:  Orinda Clawson, who plans to study pharmacy; Austin Howard, who plans to study forestry; and Catalena Vega, who plans to study criminal justice.

Continuing Education:  Enid McNatt, nursing, and Judy Nash, criminal justice, both of whom plan to complete their studies this fall.

Best wishes to all of these students as they continue their education to pursue their dreams!

And the Street Fair honored three teachers chosen by the students to receive thanks for their ongoing support.  For the third year in a row, Sarah Ball was nominated for senior high school; Gina Goetz Vanlandingham for middle school; Kayce Patterson for elementary for her second year in a row.

Without good teachers, we can’t have good students, so thank you all for your efforts!
In addition to the scholarship awards, as information was being gathered for them, the students were asked to select their favorite and best teachers.  A certificate commending these 2011 Outstanding Teachers was presented to Kayce Patterson, Elementary Level, Carol Wilson, Middle School Level, and Sarah Ball, Senior High Level.

2009 Scholarshop Winners:

2009 Carrizozo Labor Day Scholarship recipients pictured above are Danielle Cartier, whose passion for numbers will help her earn a degree in accounting; Alyshia Culley, whose desire is to become a neonatal nurse; Brandon Morales, who’s completing a degree in psychology at NM State in Las Cruces; and Judy Nash, who’s completing her double major degree in psychology and criminal justice at ENMU.

The purpose of the Street Fair was initially to provide a venue for folks to
just have fun on Labor Day Monday. The past several years, however, the
purpose has included offering scholarships and now teacher appreciations.
The event on Labor Day will continue offering a fun, relaxing yet full day of
activities, now that the Cowboy Days will join Street Fair this year. But it
will also be a reminder that the future lies in our children and will offer an
opportunity for folks to participate in helping fund more scholarships.

“THE OLD WEST RIDES AGAIN” IN CARRIZOZO, NM

Winding up the days activities is a rip-roaring Ranch Rodeo, ½ mile south of town on Hwy 54 at Hemphill Arena.  Teams of cowboys will display their skills by competing against each other in events like Wild Cow Milking, Cattle Branding, Cattle Penning, Trailer Loading, and Wild Cow Doctoring.

The Carrizozo Labor Day Street Fair began in 1993 and continues today as an all volunteer organization bringing Carrizozozo music, food, and fun on Labor Day.  As the years progress we added the Scholarship Program which grants continuing education funds to local residents. In 2013, the Fair was adopted by The Carrizozo Chamber of Commerce and is therefore a 501(c)6  organization.
